Local authorities are required by government to work with partners to produce a sustainable community strategy. We need to show how local organisations and agencies will work together to improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of their area while safeguarding the prospects of future generations.

What are the main priorities?
Through extensive research and consultation, the following issues have been identified as being important to local people:

Developing our economy, creating jobs and increasing prosperity
Providing high quality education, learning and skills opportunities
Improving travel choices and access to services
Providing high quality affordable housing
Protecting our natural and built environments and adapting and responding to climate change
Improving health and well-being
Ensuring people and communities are safe and secure
Creating strong communities and community leadership
Enabling people to enjoy culture, sports and leisure

Older people and children and young people also require particular attention because Walsall has a large and growing older population, and because children and young people are our future.

We also know that, in relation to everything we do, we must:

reduce inequalities and narrow the gap between the least and most deprived individuals and communities, while raising the quality of life for everyone
be sustainable as we aim to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits
provide and deliver effective, high quality, customer-focussed services which meet people's changing needs wherever they live
