Permanent homes sought for children in Walsall

Date Published : 12 November 2008

Walsall Council is encouraging people to find out more about adoption during National Adoption Week which runs from 10 November 2008 to 16 November 2008.

The council’s adoption team will be working alongside other local authorities as part of the Adoption in the Black Country project to raise awareness and recruit new adoptive families from across the Black Country for local children.

They are looking for people from a wide range of backgrounds to provide loving and permanent homes for Walsall children.

Have you ever thought about adoption? Some people may be considering adoption but may not look into it further because they don't believe they are suitable. They may also find the prospect of going through the adoption process daunting.

Councillor Zahid Ali, cabinet member for children’s services at Walsall Council, said: “There are currently over 20 children in Walsall, waiting for a loving family.

“Some of these children may have complex backgrounds and may have to wait longer to find an adoptive family. Some of these children may need to be placed together as a sibling group, others may need to be on their own.

“These Walsall children reflect a diversity of background. We are looking for prospective adopters for toddler to primary school age children,” he added.

Many people may have considered adoption but think they are unsuitable because they are single, over 40 or do not own their own home. In fact, anyone can adopt, regardless of ethnicity, culture, religion or sexuality, although adoptive parents must be over the age of 21. The most important factor is the ability to provide a stable and caring home for a child”.
