Transforming Learning in Walsall

Building Schools for the Future, Primary Capital Programme and Academies

Transforming Learning in Walsall is the joint name for Building Schools for the Future, the Primary Capital Programme and Walsall Academies.  These exciting new projects will transform the way children and young people learn in Walsall and the way school buildings are used to make schools truly a part of the community.

More than just new buildings!

Building Schools for the Future

Building Schools for the Future (BSF) was launched by the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF) in February 2003.  BSF is a new approach of investment in secondary school buildings that will transform where and how children learn.  They will not only be provided with improved buildings, but also high quality facilities and integrated information technology that will allow students to learn in a way that is personalised to their skills, interests and abilities.

Over 72 local authorities are already part of BSF and many of them are already able to see how the programme is benefiting students, teachers and local communities.  Local authorities are being introduced into the scheme in waves.  Walsall joins Enfield, Hounslow, North Tyneside, Rotherham, Southampton, Staffordshire and Worcestershire in wave 6a.  Walsall was chosen because of its proven track record of delivering on large, complex projects.

We will share a total of £625 million with these other local authorities.

As this is an enormous investment, we will be working in partnership alongside other council departments such as regeneration, libraries, sports and leisure and housing.  We will also be involving other partner agencies such as health, the voluntary sector and local businesses.  It will be an approach that brings the whole community together.

Primary Capital Programme

The Primary Capital Programme is the Government’s commitment to renewing at least half of all primary school buildings by 2022/23. The aim is to create primary schools that are equipped for 21st century teaching and learning, and are at the heart of their communities with a range of services in reach of every family.

The primary capital investment will support a wide range of policies with the Children and Young People’s Plan at its heart. The investment will support the transformation of education, including raising standards and improving the life chances and well being of all children, the removal of surplus places, inclusion, Every Child Matters, and services for the local community.

Academies

Academies are all-ability, state-funded schools established and managed by sponsors from a wide range of backgrounds, including high performing schools and colleges, universities, individual philanthropists, businesses, the voluntary sector, and the faith communities.  Walsall currently has one academy.

This is an extremely exciting, positive time for Walsall and we plan to keep you updated on our achievements and developments via these web pages.
