Children in care of the council

The council is responsible for making sure that all children in the borough are safe and are being properly taken care of.  Sometimes this means that the council needs to look after some children.

A child may be 'looked after' or 'in care' because of temporary or permanent problems facing their parents, as a result of abuse or neglect or because of the child's problematic behaviour.

Looked after children and young people are individuals and they come from all walks of life and have different aspirations, ambitions and identities.  Going to live away from home is not easy for any of us, especially when you have not done so before.

This page explains the services we provide for children in our care.
