Walsall’s new Mayor, Councillor John O’Hare was officially sworn into the First Citizen role at a Mayor-making ceremony last night. (Monday May 18)

Councillor O'Hare, aged 64, has stepped down as Walsall Council leader in order to take up the role. He has been council leader for two years.

Mayoress is Diane Leese, who is clerk to the governors at Streetly School, and she will play a major part in organising a host of fundraising events to support Councillor O’Hare’s charities.

Councillor O’Hare will be raising money for blind and deaf charities in Walsall during his term, working closely with different groups and organisations to ensure that funds generated are put to the most effective use.

“I am planning a range of events from fashion shows to boxing matches – there should be something for everyone to enjoy and I hope that people will support them,” said Councillor O’Hare.

“The Mayor is an ambassador for the borough and I believe the role contributes towards a pride in local identity. It is important to match the expectations and raise the aspirations of the people of Walsall.”

Councillor O’Hare, who represents the Aldridge Central and South ward, is a retired surveyor who ran a commercial property investment company. His interests include fine arts – particularly modern art.

Councillor Gary Clarke was sworn in as deputy Mayor with his wife Yvonne becoming Mayoress.

Meanwhile, outgoing Mayor, Councillor Tom Ansell, has reflected on a year of highs.
“My wife Rosemary and I have had the privilege of meeting so many fantastic people across the borough who are working hard for their communities and are an inspiration to us all,” said Councillor Ansell..

“I am delighted at the way people have supported my chosen charities which are Golden Wishes and Walsall Hospice and hope to have raised almost £20,000 for them at the end of my term.”

Councillor Ansell said he had had many memorable moments during the last 12 months including the civic reception hosted for double gold Beijing Paralympic medal-winner Eleanor Simmonds and the day the 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Staffords) paraded through Walsall town centre for the first time in ten years.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my Mayoral year and hope that Councillor O’Hare has an equally fulfilling term.”
