Log on to a greener New Year

Date Published : 19 November 2008

Residents in Walsall can now log on to a new area of the council website to find details of how their waste and recycling arrangements will change next year.

By clicking onto www.walsall.gov.uk/newbins  residents will be able to get information about the new service, which is designed to help residents recycle more of their waste.

The changes will take place between January and April 2009 and include:

* weekly collections of waste that cannot be recycled. Residents will receive new grey bins for this type of waste.

* fortnightly collections of waste that can be recycled. Residents will use their existing green bins to recycle a much wider range of materials than at present, including plastic, cardboards, newspapers, magazines, cans, tins, glass bottles and jars.

Leaflets are also being sent out to residents to give them advance notice of the changes. Special information packs with specific detailed information about the new arrangements and new collection dates will be sent to residents early in the new year with their new grey bin.

Cabinet member for environment Councillor Rachel Walker said: "These exciting changes will make it much easier for us to recycle more of our waste and will drastically reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill.

"I'm pleased we have been able to retain weekly collections of household waste that can't be recycled.

"I appreciate that these are big changes to a very important service, and we're doing everything we can to prepare residents."

As well as finding out information on the new website, people will also be able to download forms to apply for a larger grey bin if there are more than six people living in their house or to apply for an extra bin for medical waste, if they need one.
