Equality
Equality and Diversity is one of the council's five values and we will:
- through our policies, statements and actions, include, promote and celebrate the great diversity of individuals and cultures across the borough
- gear our resources to ensure that our citizens and staff will see and feel real fairness and equality for all
- make council services accessible, and tailored to the needs of all, in regard to age, gender, ethnicity, religion, lifestyle or disability.
The Equality and Diversity Team provides a service to the council, it's employees and elected members. We give support, advice and training on how to bring equality and diversity into everyday business and work.
Equality Bill
The long-awaited Equality Bill has been published. Expected to come into force by Autumn 2010, it is set to replace nine laws and more than 100 other measures with one single Act to make it easier for employers and staff to understand their legal rights and obligations.

Equality Standard for Local Government
Walsall Council has now reached level 3 of the Equality Standard for Local Government. This equates to Achieving in the new Equality Framework For Local Government.
The Diversity Peer Challenge assessment visit, a national approach to measuring an authority’s achievements in equality and diversity, was the largest and most ambitious test of the council’s work in this area. Achievement of level 3 in the Equality Standard is a key target in the Council’s drive to become an excellent council and is an essential mechanism to help us achieve our equality objectives across all services and functions.

The report consists of two documents. The first is the council’s self-assessment; an explanation of what we accomplished in the area of equality and diversity through our leadership, service delivery and employment. The second is the final report the council received from external peer assessors who critically analysed our evidence and interviewed 98 people, including elected members, chief officers, staff and representatives of the community and voluntary sector.
